Study on the Design and Development Practices of Web Applications Worldwide

SPRING, Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy & ICSI, University of California, Berkeley

We are Computer Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP), Bochum, Germany and International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), University of California, Berkeley, USA.

We are currently working on a research project that focuses on identifying and understanding the intricacies of the design, development and deployment processes that constitute the overall Web Applications Development Lifecycle, affecting modern day applications across organizations and regions. We aim to identify these processes and associated patterns at scale, and more importantly, any issues and obstacles that application designers and developers may have faced in the past, or in general. Hence, we plan to conduct qualitative interviews with subject matter experts as part of this study.

We would like to emphasize the following critical points for interested individuals:

  1. Participants must be at least 18 years old and have sufficient experience with the Web application development lifecycle to qualify as experts in line with our selection criteria.
  2. Interviews are conducted online. Audio/video recordings are anonymized immediately after the session and deleted once the study is published.
  3. Raw data will not be shared with any person, entity or organization not directly associated with this study. Findings will only be published in anonymized and aggregated form.
  4. No personal information associated with participants, their employer, or other confidential data will be shared during or after completion of the study.
  5. For reference, aggregated and anonymized findings follow the academic standard demonstrated by prior work, such as Software developers' perceptions of productivity.
  6. The interview session is designed to be highly interactive. Participants may skip any question or exit at any point if they feel uncomfortable.
  7. As a token of appreciation, participants will be compensated with $50 upon completion of the interview.
